Bis einer weint!

SantaCon Wien 2009

Santa: "HO HO HO! Wien is MY turf now, Christkindl. I've been making a list, checking it twice, and I know who's been naughty or nice... and who's going to get their skinny white angel butt kicked if they don't get out of my way. It's time to work for me or leave for China, baby boy."

Christkindl: "Santa, du Oaschsau! Gemma auf die Bluatwiesn!"

WHEN: Saturday, December 12, 2009; meet for briefing at 2pm, depart promptly at 3pm

WHERE: monochrom offices, Quartier 21, Museumsquartier, Wien

FOLLOW @SantaconWien on Twitter to keep up with our location on Saturday!

Choose your side (Santas or Christkindls), make or buy a costume (it can be simple!) and then just show up at the monochrom office at 2pm. After a short briefing, we will walk to several nearby locations and perform a short, improvised "fight scene".

Remember: it is not necessary to have a great costume. Participation and performance are more important than attire. Even a 1€ Santa hat is enough. Just show up, and join in the fun!

Santas: Wear a classic Santa Claus costume (red with white trim), a red hat and a white beard. Or just improvise! Anything suggestive of the Santa idiom is OK. Also OK are any other characters -associated- with Santa Claus, such as reindeer (including the famous Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer), Miss Santa Claus, and Santa's Elves. Transgressive, bizarre, or inappropriate costumes are also welcome, so long as they are still somewhat recognizably Santa-related.

Props can also be fun! Sacks (normally used by Santa to carry his toys) are good, and can be filled with a pillow (good for beating down Christkindls) or many empty gift boxes (great for throwing at Christkindls).

Christkindls: Christkind, the traditional Christmas gift-bringer, the Almighty Baby Jesus! An angel-like entity in white or gold, wearing a toga and showing off his Roman Catholic cross; smiling, graceful, full of eternal love. But sometimes Christkind gets angry, especially when a new mobster arrives.

Don't worry about making the perfect costume. A Christkindl appearance can easily be had simply by making a toga from an old white bedsheet.

Playing against type is great fun: Since the Christkindl is normally portrayed as young, pure and innocent, consider dressing as a drunken, rowdy, unshaven Christkindl, with a bottle of booze in one hand, or a crucifix with which to threaten the encroaching Santas.

This event is inspired by Santacon, an annual street performance originally created by the infamous San Francisco context hacking group, The Cacophony Society.

It is "a mass gathering of people dressed in their various interpretations of Santa Claus costumes and performing publicly on streets and in bars in cities around the world. The focus is on spontaneity, creativity, and the improvisational nature of human interaction while having a good time and spreading cheer and goodwill to all they come across.
SantaCon events are noted for cheerfully bawdy and harmless behavior."
