i think the most expensive real wood product these days is perhaps the skateboard...and I'm only talking about the deck...and a USED one at that! intially a thing you screw trucks with wheels on and pretty much batter until it breaks under your happy (and equally battered) feet, now there's a big market on ebay for legendary decks from the 80s and 90s. at the end of the day though, all it is is canadian maple, around 9 plys of it, pressed and cut into a shape with tail, nose (if the board was made in 1988-ish or later) and of course a concave. each brand has or had their own trademark name for their concaves. i take comfort in the thought that there are people who are actually thinking about concaves and how to call them. i particularly liked santa cruz's "cruz missile II" about 15 years ago. these days i like girl skateboard's "harsh concave" because it sums up my fascination with naming conventions for bent things. |

incredibly, some skate companies produce their boards in china now, which is deemed "unamerican" by some of the more stupid other skate companies. they don't even mention that worker exploitation might be a bad thing - it's just the fact that "american is better, duuuude". wankers. anyway. where did i put the remote control? |
